₦1.3 Billion Budget Scandal: Adeyemi Asks Tinubu to Constitute Independent Probe Panel Including NBA
The Director-General of the controversial Presidential Fiscal and Infrastructure Projects Council (PFIPC), Adeyemi, has written to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, calling for the establishment of an independent investigative panel to examine allegations surrounding an alleged ₦1.3 billion budget scandal linked to the council.
In the letter addressed to the President, Adeyemi reportedly appealed for a transparent and impartial investigation, insisting that the controversy should be handled by an independent body capable of restoring public confidence in the outcome. He proposed that the panel should include representatives of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), civil society organisations, anti-corruption agencies and other credible stakeholders.
According to Adeyemi, the allegations surrounding the council have generated widespread public debate and conflicting claims, making it necessary for an independent panel to establish the facts. He maintained that only a transparent investigation would clear the air, determine whether any wrongdoing occurred and ensure accountability where necessary.
The DG reportedly rejected claims that the council was created to defraud the government, arguing that he and other officials have consistently acted within the law. He maintained that he has nothing to hide and is prepared to cooperate fully with any legitimate investigation authorised by the Federal Government.
Adeyemi further stated that involving the Nigerian Bar Association and other independent institutions would strengthen the credibility of the inquiry. According to him, a broad-based panel would reassure Nigerians that the investigation is free from political influence and focused solely on uncovering the truth.
The controversy surrounding the PFIPC has continued to attract national attention, with opposition parties and civil society organisations demanding accountability over the alleged ₦1.3 billion budget allocation. Some political leaders have also called for legislative and independent investigations into the activities of the council.
Supporters of an independent inquiry argue that transparency is essential in addressing public concerns and preserving confidence in public institutions. They believe an open investigation would help determine whether due process was followed in the budgeting and implementation of the council’s activities.
However, some government supporters have described the allegations as politically motivated, insisting that conclusions should not be reached before the completion of any official investigation. They have urged Nigerians to allow due process to take its course and avoid prejudging those involved.
Political analysts say the latest letter from Adeyemi introduces a new dimension to the controversy because it comes directly from the head of the council at the centre of the allegations. They note that his request for an independent probe could intensify calls for a broader review of the issues raised in recent weeks.
Meanwhile, anti-corruption advocates have continued to stress the importance of accountability and transparency in the management of public funds. They argue that allegations involving government institutions should always be subjected to credible investigations in line with the Constitution and existing laws.
At the time of filing this report, the Presidency had not issued an official response to Adeyemi’s request for the establishment of an independent investigative panel. It also remains unclear whether the Federal Government will adopt the proposal or rely on existing institutions to examine the allegations.
As public interest in the matter continues to grow, attention is expected to remain on the Presidency and other relevant authorities regarding the next steps in addressing the controversy. Observers believe that whatever decision is taken will have implications for public trust, accountability and the government’s anti-corruption efforts.
