Rapper 50 Cent has declared that “New York is over” following the election of Zohran Mamdani as the mayor of New York City. After Mamdani’s win on November 4, 2025, the rapper took to Instagram to express his displeasure with the result and the incoming mayor’s policy agenda.

In his post, 50 Cent shared an AI-generated tombstone image reading “R.I.P NYC Founded 1624 Died 2025”, and accompanied it with the caption “New York is over pack it up, let’s go! THE MAN’S First job is Mayor MAMDANI run New York.” He also posted a picture of a Yankees cap thrown into a trash bin, symbolising what he presented as the end of the New York he knew.

50 Cent’s objections stem largely from Mamdani’s proposed policies, including a planned tax increase of 2 % on high earners (those earning over $1 million annually) and other progressive agenda items focusing on affordability and public services. He warned that such changes would drive “big money” out of the city and argued that if policing were to be scaled back in favour of social-service-led responses, the city could descend into disorder.

Though 50 Cent no longer resides in New York (he moved to Houston), his strong public reaction has drawn attention to the ideology behind Mamdani’s election as well as the broader debate about tax policy and urban governance in major U.S. cities
