Jeremy Renner daughter Ava essay audiobook in My Next Breath

Jeremy Renner has shared a deeply personal part of his journey of recovery in his memoir My Next Breath. The actor revealed that his 12-year-old daughter, Ava, played a special role in both the written and audiobook versions of the memoir. Her involvement centers on an essay she wrote for a school assignment, which Renner decided to include at the very beginning of the book.

The essay recalled the first time Renner was able to pick Ava up from school following his near-fatal snowplow accident on January 1, 2023. Although the moment might seem ordinary under regular circumstances, for Renner it marked a significant milestone: getting into the car again, even while still not fully strong. He describes fumbling down steps, moving slowly, but feeling the emotional weight of progress. That moment, Ava chose to write about it—for her it was a moment of pride. For him it symbolized hope and healing.

What Modifies her role further is that she not only wrote the essay, but she also narrated it for the memoir’s audiobook recording. Renner said that he asked her, at the end of writing the book, if he could include her essay at the start. He did not expect that she would also be the one to record its narration. Her voice in that opening section brings emotional resonance, showing the father-daughter bond, and how much her presence helped in his recovery process.

Renner has explained that including Ava in this way was both a symbolic gesture and a way to show her—and himself—how far they have come together. He emphasized protecting her privacy; for example, when posting on social media he often uses an emoji to obscure her face. Yet this project was one he felt proud to share, because Ava’s contribution reflected emotional growth, closeness, and mutual healing.
