Households across Nigeria are reeling under a worsening shortage of cooking gas as the price for a 12.5-kilogram cylinder of LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) has jumped to ₦25,000. The sharp increase has left many struggling to afford basic cooking fuel.

Just a week ago, the same cylinder was being sold at about ₦17,500. The new rate means that one kilogram of LPG now retails for between ₦1,500 and ₦2,000, depending on location.

Industry sources point to a recent industrial action by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) as a major trigger of the supply disruption. The strike affected the operations of major suppliers and constrained dealers from restocking their cylinders. One key supplier, Dangote Petroleum Refinery, was cited as especially impacted by the interruption in distribution.

In cities like Lagos, some gas plants reportedly shut down operations for lack of product, causing many consumers to travel long distances in search of cooking fuel. As a result, households are switching back to traditional fuels like firewood and kerosene, despite health and environmental risks.

Energy experts warn that the crisis underscores the fragility of Nigeria’s LPG supply chain. They say that when major supply nodes are disrupted—whether from labor unrest, logistical failures, or policy lapses—the effects quickly cascade to consumers. Some officials remain hopeful that with resolution of the labor dispute and renewed distribution efforts, supply and prices may stabilize in the near term.
