Tyler Perry donates $100,000 to Marvin Winans
Tyler Perry has stepped in with a $100,000 donation to Bishop Marvin Winans’ Perfecting Church in Detroit amid controversy surrounding the pastor’s public scolding of a female congregant over her donation.
The donation comes in the wake of viral attention to an incident during the church’s “Day of Giving,” held October 19, when Bishop Winans corrected a longtime member, Roberta McCoy, after she gave $1,235 in faith. The pastor had reportedly asked for “$1,000 plus $1,000,” and when McCoy offered to contribute the remainder later, he responded publicly, “That ain’t what I asked you to do.” The exchange, captured on livestream, drew criticism from viewers who felt she was treated insensitively.
In defending the gesture, Bishop Winans said he was calling congregants in increments to manage the flow of giving and that the correction was not meant as a rebuke. He later addressed the public reaction and apologized privately to McCoy, who reaffirmed her support for the church.
Winans revealed to believers that Tyler Perry had made the donation and asked that his name be spoken aloud. He celebrated what he described as a turnaround of public criticism into support, saying, “What the devil meant for evil, God turned it around.” The donation is intended to advance the church’s building project and ongoing ministry work.
The move has elicited mixed responses online. Some praised Perry’s generosity and reading of the situation as an opportunity to support faith work. Others, however, questioned whether the donation implicitly condoned the pastor’s handling of the earlier moment or signaled an alignment with a controversial episode.
