Tinubu asks Senate to confirm new service chiefs

President Bola Tinubu has formally requested the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to screen and confirm a new set of military service chiefs as part of a major shake-up in the country’s defence leadership.

In his letter to the Senate, Tinubu named the nominees as follows: Olufemi Oluyede for Chief of Defence Staff, Waheedi Shaibu for Chief of Army Staff, Idi Abbas for Chief of Naval Staff, Kennedy Aneke for Chief of Air Staff, and Emmanuel Undiendeye for Chief of Defence Intelligence.

The President emphasised the need for “expeditious consideration and confirmation” by the Senate, referencing the constitutional requirements and the Armed Forces Act as legal basis for the appointments.

The request was read on the floor of the Senate by Senate President Godswill Akpabio and the matter was referred to the Committee of the Whole for screening. The confirmation process is expected to take place soon.

This development follows a wide-ranging defense leadership reshuffle announced just days earlier, underscoring the government’s intention to strengthen the country’s security architecture amid rising internal security threats.
