Josep Martínez involved in fatal accident
Veteran Spanish goalkeeper Josep Martínez of Inter Milan has been involved in a tragic traffic accident that resulted in the death of an elderly man. According to Italian police, Martínez’s car struck an 81-year-old man in an electric wheelchair on Tuesday morning in the Fenegrò area of Como Province as he was on his way to training at Inter’s facility in Appiano Gentile.
Police sources indicate the crash happened around 09:40 a.m., and early reconstruction suggests the elderly man may have veered into Martínez’s path, possibly due to a medical episode. Martínez immediately stopped and remained at the scene, assisting before emergency services arrived. Unfortunately, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Martínez, aged 27, is reported to be physically unharmed but in shock, and he is cooperating with the investigation. Mandatory alcohol and drug tests were carried out, as per protocol.
The incident has deeply affected Inter Milan, which announced the cancellation of its press conference scheduled ahead of the upcoming match. The club has not issued a full comment while awaiting further details.
