Nigerian government N2.3bn universities arrears
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in Nigeria has suspended its two-week warning strike after the Federal Government of Nigeria announced that it has released ₦2.3 billion to universities to clear outstanding salary and promotion arrears.
Education Minister Tunji Alausa revealed that a total of ₦2.311 billion was disbursed through the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF). He stated that payment alerts should begin arriving at beneficiary institutions soon.
The release of funds was described as “Batch 8 salary and promotion arrears” for university staff, covering both academic and non-academic personnel. The government also announced plans to finalise the release of third-party non-statutory deductions and pension remittances for university staff.
In addition, Minister Alausa said that the Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) will be fully integrated into university staff salaries from 2026, aiming for more predictable and sustainable payments.
The move is part of a broader negotiation process under the Yayale Ahmed Negotiation Committee between the government and university-based unions to address long-standing welfare, funding and revitalisation issues in Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.
