Delta university rusticates student over TikTok video
The management of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, has rusticated a female student for filming her dying colleague at the university’s health centre and sharing the disturbing video on TikTok. The disciplinary action followed widespread outrage after the footage went viral, drawing heavy criticism from students, staff, and the public for what was described as a gross act of insensitivity.
According to a statement issued by the university’s spokesperson, the student violated institutional regulations on conduct, privacy, and decency. The statement explained that the incident occurred when a male student collapsed at the school’s health centre. Instead of helping or seeking medical assistance, the accused student recorded the victim in distress and later uploaded the video on social media for attention.
The management described the act as “inhumane and unacceptable,” emphasizing that the decision to rusticate her was taken after a thorough disciplinary review. The university said it remains committed to upholding ethical standards and protecting the dignity of students on campus.
The video has since been removed, but not before triggering outrage online, with many Nigerians condemning the growing culture of filming tragic incidents instead of offering help. Student associations and campus groups have also urged the university community to treat such behaviour with zero tolerance.
Authorities confirmed that the student who was filmed eventually passed away from complications related to his condition. The university has since strengthened its code of conduct policies to prevent similar cases in the future.
