Police arrest man for killing Zamfara traveller in Kebbi
The Kebbi State Police Command has arrested a 50-year-old man for allegedly hacking a traveller from Zamfara State to death along the Yauri–Zuru road. The tragic incident occurred earlier in the week and has drawn condemnation from residents and security officials in the region.
According to a statement by the command’s spokesperson, SP Nafiu Abubakar, the suspect, identified as Usman Garba, attacked the victim with a machete during a heated argument. Preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased, who was travelling from Zamfara to Niger State, had stopped briefly to rest when the suspect confronted him for unknown reasons. The argument quickly escalated, leading to the brutal killing.
Abubakar said passersby alerted the police after discovering the victim’s lifeless body near the roadside. Officers from the Yauri Division immediately launched a manhunt and arrested the suspect within hours of the incident. The weapon used in the attack was also recovered from the scene.
During interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed to the crime, claiming that he acted out of anger. The police have transferred him to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation. He will be charged to court once the investigation is completed.
Commissioner of Police, CP Chris Aimionowane, condemned the killing and assured the public that justice would be served. He urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with the police as efforts to ensure peace and safety continue across the state.
