Ogun State kidnappers ransom rescue

Authorities in Ogun State say a daring rescue operation has led to the death of two alleged kidnappers and the safe recovery of a victim after a ransom demand of ₦30 million.

The incident unfolded when gunmen reportedly invaded the compound of one Alhaji Hassan Atoyebi in the Onipanu-Ota area at about 8:14 p.m. They pretended the generator had malfunctioned, luring Atoyebi and another resident outside. The victim was then abducted as the assailants fled with valuables including a PoS machine, ₦900,000 in cash, mobile phones, and car keys to a Highlander and a Corolla.

The kidnappers soon contacted the family demanding ₦30 million for the victim’s release. In response, the Ogun State Police Command mobilised a tactical team, supported by the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Anti-Crime Section, surveillance teams, local vigilantes and hunters. The security forces traced the kidnappers to a hideout along a creek, where a firefight ensued. Two suspects were killed, others escaped with gunshot wounds, and the victim was rescued unharmed and reunited with his family.

The police spokesperson, CSP Omolola Odutola, confirmed the operation and noted the recovery of the victim’s phone and vehicle keys at the scene. She stated that the command is committed to ensuring Ogun State remains unsafe for criminals.

This incident highlights the ongoing kidnapping risk faced by residents of border towns and peripheral communities in Ogun State and neighbouring areas. The swift and coordinated response by security agencies, local vigilantes and community hunters was praised by residents as instrumental to the positive outcome.
