Alejandro Gil Fernández investigation Cuba
The government of Cuba has announced a formal investigation into the former Minister of Economy and Planning, Alejandro Gil Fernández, who served also as Deputy Prime Minister. The announcement came after his dismissal in early February 2024 and stated that a “rigorous investigation” has established that Gil committed “serious errors … in the performance of his duties.”
In a televised statement, President Miguel Díaz‑Canel said that the Ministry of the Interior and the Attorney General’s Office would take action to fully clarify Gil’s conduct, adding that the leadership of the Communist Party and government “has never allowed, nor will it ever allow, the proliferation of corruption, simulation and insensitivity.”
Gil had overseen major economic reforms, including a 2021 monetary and price adjustment that many analysts regard as responsible for worsening Cuba’s economic crisis with sharp inflation, frequent blackouts and chronic shortages. Though the investigation is ongoing, no formal charge list specifying espionage or other specific crimes has been disclosed by official Cuban sources. Independent observers note that although Gil’s case is the highest-ranking to surface in recent years, the process appears opaque and key details remain unrevealed.
The development could reflect increasing internal pressure within Cuba’s ruling party to demonstrate accountability as the country grapples with economic collapse and popular discontent. It also raises questions about transparency in how elite misconduct is handled. For now, the investigation remains public in name only and the outcome is uncertain.
