Lamine Yamal why I can’t compare myself to Messi
Teenager Lamine Yamal has made it clear that he will not compare himself to Lionel Messi, despite frequent parallels drawn between their careers and talent. The young Barcelona star emphasised that his focus is on forging his own path rather than trying to measure up to one of football’s greatest legends.
Yamal said, “I don’t compare myself to him, because I don’t compare myself to anyone and much less with Messi.” He added that comparisons simply “don’t make sense” and reiterated his admiration for Messi while firmly stating that his own journey is independent.
The reason behind his stance has been consistently articulated: Yamal wants to enjoy the game, give his best every day, and concentrate on improvement rather than Side-by-Side comparisons. “We are thinking about improving ourselves, every day, and on being better on the next day,” he explained.
Though the comparison with Messi is understandable both came through Barcelona’s youth system and play in attacking positions Yamal believes it’s neither fair nor helpful. He stated on one occasion: “Messi has scored thousands of goals like this, so I can’t compare myself to him. I’m just trying to improve and go my own way.”
In short, Yamal is carving out his identity and maintaining humility despite early success and high expectations. He acknowledges the greatness of Messi but remains committed to being himself rather than being seen as the next version of someone else.
