Antonio Brown extradited attempted murder charge

Former NFL star Antonio Brown has been extradited from Dubai to the United States to face a second-degree attempted murder charge linked to a May shooting in Miami.

According to authorities, Brown, aged 37, was apprehended by U.S. Marshals in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and flown into Essex County, New Jersey, where he is currently detained pending transfer to Miami where the case will be prosecuted.

The charge stems from an incident outside a celebrity boxing event in Miami’s Little Haiti neighbourhood on May 16. Police records show Brown allegedly grabbed a handgun from a security staffer during a confrontation with a man named Zul‑Qarnain Kwame Nantambu and fired two shots. One of the bullets reportedly grazed the victim’s neck.

Brown’s case marks a significant escalation in his post-football legal troubles. During his eleven‐to‐twelve year NFL career, most notably with the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he was regarded as an elite wide receiver. However, off-field incidents subsequently overshadowed his on-field achievements.

If convicted for second-degree attempted murder with a firearm, Brown faces up to fifteen years in prison under Florida law, along with fines.

The Miami Police Department stated that the arrest warrant issued in June followed a review of surveillance footage, cellphone video and shell casing evidence recovered at the scene. Brown has publicly claimed that he was assaulted and that he acted in self-defence, though prosecutors say the evidence indicates two shots were fired by him.

This development adds to Brown’s increasingly complex legal history, which includes past domestic violence allegations, failure to pay child support, battery charges and other incidents after his departure from professional football in 2021.
