Justice for Ugochi
A 34-year-old woman identified as Success Ugochi has tragically been found raped and strangled to death in her room in the Obigbo area of Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Family friends say the victim’s body was discovered by her colleagues after she failed to show up for work.
According to the account, Ugochi lived in a compound where her male neighbour, known as “Black Maria,” allegedly broke into her room at around 2 a.m., raped her, and then strangled her. The body reportedly had visible marks of strangulation and other signs of violent assault, while the victim’s mobile phone was missing from the scene.
The suspect, who had allegedly previously attempted to rape Ugochi in October, was apprehended by the police. He reportedly confessed to the offence and implicated another individual, identified as the landlord’s daughter, in facilitating the crime. The matter has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
Outrage has grown across social media with the hashtag #JusticeForUgochi as calls intensify for a transparent and swift prosecution of all parties involved. A family friend noted the victim “has nobody” capable of fighting for her, and appealed to citizens and rights groups to amplify the case so it isn’t “swept under the rug.”
