Bayelsa police inspector brutalises children witchcraft
An officer of the Nigeria Police Force in Bayelsa State has been arrested for allegedly brutalising his own children after accusing them of involvement in witchcraft.
The accused, identified as Inspector Sunday Idey, is attached to the Anti-Cultism Unit of the Igbogene Police Division. According to reports, the children’s cries alerted neighbours, who then contacted operatives of Operation Doo Akpor. The children were rescued, taken to hospital for treatment, and Idey was arrested and is now in custody.
The state Commissioner of Police, Francis Idu, confirmed the arrest and stated that investigations are ongoing.
Human rights and child-protection groups in Bayelsa have condemned the incident as both “inhumane and deeply disturbing,” pointing out the dangers of superstitious beliefs being used to justify violence against children.
