NFF defends Super Eagles hotel choice Morocco

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has responded to public criticism after a video emerged showing reportedly poor hotel accommodation for the Super Eagles in Rabat, Morocco ahead of their play-off match versus Gabon National Football Team. The footage, shared by midfielder Alex Iwobi, shows what many described as “shabby” conditions, including cracked walls and a dilapidated surrounding area.

In its defence, the NFF stated that the accommodation chosen Rive Hôtel in Rabat is compliant with the relevant standards and was selected after due consideration of logistics, proximity to training and match venues, and cost-effectiveness. They explained that match-camp arrangements often involve negotiation with host nation systems and that their priority was to ensure minimal travel fatigue and secure proper training conditions.

However, the public backlash has been strong. Many fans on social media say that a national side representing one of Africa’s leading football nations should not be lodged in accommodation perceived as sub-standard. Some have pointed out that Morocco has numerous higher-rated hotels and questioned why the team was not placed in one of them.

The timing is particularly sensitive: the Super Eagles are preparing for a crucial stage in their quest for qualification to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, so issues of comfort, rest, travel and general welfare are seen by many as directly impacting performance. The NFF says that despite the criticism, all necessary preparations have been made and the team’s focus remains entirely on the game.

In summary, while the NFF defends its choice of hotel based on logistics and budget considerations, the incident highlights persistent concerns about player welfare, transparency in football administration and whether top-level national athletes are accorded the standards befitting their role.
