The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in Nigeria has announced a ban on the production, sale and distribution of alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets or in bottles/pet containers below 200 millilitres.

According to the agency, the policy will be fully enforced starting 1 January 2026, following a phase-out period that ends in December 2025.

NAFDAC’s Director-General noted that the move is driven by serious public health concerns: these small-packaged alcoholic drinks are highly accessible and affordable, making them attractive to minors and other vulnerable groups. The regulator linked them to increased incidents of domestic violence, road accidents, school drop-outs and substance abuse.

The measure builds on earlier directives: In 2022 the agency had stopped registration of such products and required a phase-out of sachet alcohol by January 2024.

In conjunction with the ban, the Federal Government has also approved recruitment of additional 1,000 officers into NAFDAC from December to strengthen enforcement across Nigeria.
