Iran public execution physician murder

An Iranian man was publicly executed on Tuesday after being convicted of murdering a physician in the southwestern province of Yasuj (capital of Kohgiluyeh and Boyer‑Ahmad Province), the country’s judiciary announced.

The victim, identified as Dr Masoud Davoodi, a cardiologist, was shot and stabbed to death on November 12, 2023, while returning home, according to reports.

According to the judicial agency, the convict underwent a mental-health evaluation before the sentence, and the country’s Supreme Court upheld the death sentence under the doctrine of qisas (retribution).

The execution was presented by authorities as a deterrent message: “The implementation of this sentence is a message to those who seek to disturb the security of society and citizens,” prosecutor Vahid Mousavian told the official Mizan Online outlet.

While public executions are relatively rare in Iran with the vast majority of death sentences carried out inside prisons this case is part of a recent trend of publicly visible capital punishments deemed especially severe by Iranian authorities.
