The Nigerian health insurance landscape has taken a global turn with the launch of a new international medical plan by AXA Mansard Health. The plan, called iMED, was introduced at a breakfast meeting held in Lagos for HR and business leaders. According to the company, the plan is designed to meet the needs of today’s highly mobile workforce by providing access to healthcare in the United States, United Kingdom and other parts of the world.

Under the iMED plan, subscribers gain access to a network of more than 11,000 hospitals worldwide, as well as additional services such as priority appointments and access to over 1,000 premium airport lounges globally. The plan comes in different tiers for example, the “Standard”, “Classic” and “Prime” options each offering varying levels of benefits including hospital charges, surgery, outpatient care, annual checks and routine optical and dental services.

A key feature of the plan is its global coverage. The area of cover can be selected to include “Worldwide excluding US” or “Worldwide” (which includes the US). In addition, the plan covers services such as organ transplant, cancer treatment, psychiatric treatment, home nursing, telemedicine and medical evacuation.

The iMED plan complements AXA Mansard’s existing international health offering. Its international health plan already provided worldwide coverage including access to 11,000 hospitals and was administered via AXA PPP International, a firm with over 40 years’ experience in medical insurance.

For organisations and individuals in Nigeria with global health exposure or expatriate concerns, this plan may present a timely opportunity. The premium levels vary by plan option and area of cover, with one cited starting price at around US $1,682 per year for certain tiers.
