Wike clash with military officer threat to national security

Former Chief of Army Staff Tukur Yusuf Buratai has publicly condemned the recent confrontation between FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and a uniformed military officer in Abuja, stating that the incident poses a “clear threat to national security and institutional integrity.”

According to Buratai, the altercation, which took place at a disputed land site in the Gaduwa district of Abuja, cannot be dismissed as mere misconduct or political theatre. He described Wike’s public disparagement of the uniformed officer as “an act of profound indiscipline that strikes at the core of our nation’s command and control structure.”

In his statement, he stressed that by insulting a military officer in uniform, the minister undermined the chain of command, disrespected the authority of the Commander-in-Chief, and harmed the morale of those serving in the Armed Forces. He warned that such behaviour “erodes the very foundation of discipline upon which our national security apparatus stands.”

Buratai therefore called on Wike to issue an immediate and unequivocal public apology to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief, to the Nigerian Armed Forces, and to the officer whose honour was said to have been violated.

The incident has drawn responses from other military-veteran bodies, who have also criticised the minister and demanded restitution.
