Peter Obi denounces Wike‑naval officer clash
Former governor and 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi has sharply condemned the recent altercation between Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and a naval officer in Abuja. Obi described the incident as a ,typical example coming out of a “disgraced country”, highlighting it as a symptom of Nigeria’s deepening institutional decay.
In a statement posted on his social‑media account titled “Wike versus Naval Officer: A Lesson for National Reflection”, Obi wrote that what should have been a routine civic matter instead “once again became a national embarrassment”. He questioned why military personnel are often drawn into purely civil matters and asked whether clear boundaries between administrative authority and duties of security agencies still exist in Nigeria.
Obi urged the nation to rethink its governance culture, saying that when public officials act beyond institutional norms and when security agencies are used in ways that blur professional boundaries, both governance and public trust are weakened. He emphasised that titles such as “His Excellency” or “Honourable” must come with behaviour that reflects the dignity of the office.
