President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reappointed Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd) as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for another five-year term.

According to a State House statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Marwa will now remain in charge of the NDLEA until 2031.

Marwa was first appointed to lead the agency in January 2021 under former President Muhammadu Buhari. Before that, he chaired the Presidential Advisory Committee on the Elimination of Drug Abuse from 2018 to 2020.

A former military governor of Lagos and Borno States, Marwa has a long service record. He is a graduate of the Nigerian Military School and the Nigerian Defence Academy. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1973, and later served as Brigade Major of the 23 Armoured Brigade, Aide-de-Camp to the Chief of Army Staff, and Academic Registrar at the NDA.

He also represented Nigeria diplomatically, serving as Deputy Defence Adviser at Nigeria’s Embassy in Washington, D.C., and as Defence Adviser to Nigeria’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations.

In terms of education, Marwa holds two advanced degrees: a Master of Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh, and a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University.

Under his leadership, the NDLEA has achieved significant milestones. The State House highlighted that the agency has arrested over 73,000 drug traffickers and barons and seized more than 15 million kilograms of illicit drugs.

President Tinubu described Marwa’s reappointment as a vote of confidence in his “onerous efforts” to rid Nigeria of the scourge of drug trafficking and abuse. He urged Marwa to maintain momentum in tracking major drug offenders, especially those targeting young people.
