Lagos State arrests 15 for street begging

The Lagos State Government has stepped up efforts to crack down on street begging, arresting a number of individuals in recent operations. According to the Lagos State Environmental Task Force, 27 people were detained, including 15 minors, for allegedly begging in busy traffic areas.

The raids were carried out along major routes such as Awolowo Way to Falomo Roundabout, Ikoyi, Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue, and parts of Lekki Road. Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, said those arrested will be transferred to appropriate government facilities in accordance with relevant laws.

This operation is part of a broader, week-long crackdown initiated by the Lagos government in response to persistent calls from residents. The Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende, emphasized that the activities of street beggars pose both security risks and environmental nuisances.

Authorities also noted that the arrested individuals would not simply be confined but will be given a chance for rehabilitation and reintegration. Some of the adults are expected to take part in empowerment programmes to help them become self-reliant, while efforts are underway to reunite minors with their families.

While the Lagos government’s intensified enforcement reflects a strong stance against public nuisance, the crackdown also raises important social questions about poverty, vulnerability, and the long-term support systems for those rescued.
