UEFA sanctions Marseille partial stadium closure

UEFA has ordered a partial closure of Olympique de Marseille’s stadium as punishment for repeated fan trouble.

According to UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB), the club has faced multiple offences, including lighting fireworks, throwing objects, blocking passageways, and crowd disturbances. As a result, the “Virage Nord” (North Stand) of Marseille’s stadium must remain closed for at least one forthcoming UEFA match.

In addition to the stadium sanction, Marseille has also been fined €24,500 for the misconduct of their supporters in a recent UEFA Champions League match.

This isn’t the first time Marseille has been punished for fan behaviour. In 2022, UEFA imposed a similar stand closure and a large fine after crowd violence during a Europa Conference League semi-final.
