Tinubu sends peace envoy to Plateau

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has dispatched a peace envoy to Plateau State as part of renewed efforts to calm intercommunal tensions and strengthen local conflict-resolution mechanisms.

The envoy, Dr. Abiodun Essiet, who serves as Tinubu’s Senior Special Assistant on Community Engagement for the North Central Zone, began a three-day working visit to the state. Over the course of her trip, she met with a wide array of stakeholders, including Christian clerics, traditional leaders, representatives of Fulani herders, youth and women groups.

A major part of her mission is to establish “community-based peace structures” across all 17 local government areas in Plateau. These grassroots structures are expected to play a key role in promoting dialogue, reconciliation, and peaceful coexistence among the state’s diverse communities.

Dr. Essiet also engaged with security agencies. She held discussions with officials from the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian Army’s 3rd Division to address security concerns and explore ways to improve cooperation between the federal government and local communities.

In addition, she met widows and conveyed President Tinubu’s message of reconciliation, stressing the need for inclusive engagement across ethnic and faith lines.

Tinubu’s move comes amid a broader security push. Earlier this year, he directed national security chiefs to overhaul strategies in Plateau, among other states, to stem rising violence. The president has also vowed to bring perpetrators of attacks in Plateau to justice.
