Nigeria’s hopes of playing in the 2026 FIFA World Cup have been dashed following a dramatic and heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat to the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the final of the African qualifying playoffs.

In a tense match held in Rabat, Morocco, Nigeria took an early lead in the third minute through a long-range strike by Frank Onyeka, though the goal came via a deflection. DR Congo responded in the 32nd minute when Meschak Elia pounced after a turnover, slotting home a well-executed counterattack.

Despite Nigeria’s early dominance and sustained pressure, the second half and the ensuing extra time produced no further goals. When the match went to penalties, DR Congo held their nerve. Their captain, Chancel Mbemba, stepped up to take the decisive kick and calmly converted, securing a 4–3 shootout win for his team.

The result ends Nigeria’s World Cup journey for the second consecutive tournament, a huge blow for a nation with a rich footballing history. The Super Eagles had earlier reached this playoff final after a tense extra-time win over Gabon.

For DR Congo, the victory means they now advance to the inter-confederation playoff in March 2026. If they succeed there, they could reach the World Cup for the first time since 1974, when the country was then known as Zaire.

Nigeria’s campaign was further complicated by the injury to star striker Victor Osimhen, who was forced off in the second half and did not return. Their missed penalties in the shootout including failed efforts by Calvin Bassey, Semi Ajayi, and Moses Simon proved costly.

DR Congo’s dramatic win was also marked by a late tactical gamble: they substituted in Timothy Fayulu as goalkeeper just before extra time, and he produced key saves in the shootout.

As DR Congo move on to the inter-continental playoff, Nigeria will be left to reflect on yet another qualification heartbreak. The Super Eagles now face a period of soul-searching as they plan for future campaigns.
