Tinubu urges Super Eagles to focus on AFCON after World Cup exit
President Bola Tinubu has called on the Super Eagles to move past their disappointing exit from the World Cup qualifiers and turn their attention to the upcoming African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu praised the team for their effort and resilience during the qualifying campaign, even though they lost to the Democratic Republic of Congo in a penalty shootout.
He acknowledged how painful it was for the team and the nation to miss out on the World Cup for the second time in a row, but stressed that this should not mark the end of their mission.
Tinubu urged football administrators, players, and all stakeholders to “go back to the drawing board” to correct the shortcomings exposed in the qualifiers.
He emphasized that now is the time to “focus all efforts on the Cup of Nations,” expressing hope that the Super Eagles would reclaim their former dominance in African football.
