Steve McClaren resigns Jamaica coach
Steve McClaren has resigned as Jamaica’s national football team head coach after his side failed to secure automatic qualification for the 2026 World Cup.
The decision came shortly after a crucial 0–0 draw with Curaçao at Kingston’s National Stadium, a result that handed Curaçao the top spot in the qualifying group. McClaren called the move “in the best interests of the team,” accepting responsibility and reflecting that a “fresh voice” may be needed to drive Jamaica forward.
He said that leading the Reggae Boyz had been “one of the greatest honours” of his career, but admitted that as a results-driven business, their failure to hit the target meant change was necessary.
McClaren had taken over Jamaica in July 2024. During his 18-month tenure, he led the team in a total of 23–24 matches, with a mix of wins, draws, and losses.
Jamaica now still has a possible route to the World Cup via the inter-confederation playoffs, but McClaren’s departure leaves a void in leadership.
