Repentant cultists surrender arms in Ondo
Repentant members of a cult group have surrendered their arms and ammunition to the police in Ondo State as part of ongoing efforts to reduce crime and violence in the state. The surrender took place during a security engagement with community leaders and law enforcement officials, where the former cultists agreed to lay down their weapons and embrace peace.
Police authorities confirmed that the weapons recovered included locally made guns, ammunition, and other dangerous items used during past violent activities. The repentant cultists stated that they chose to renounce cultism due to increased security pressure and sustained community sensitization on the dangers of criminal activities.
The Ondo State Police Command described the development as a positive step toward restoring lasting peace in affected communities. The command noted that the decision by the former cultists would help reduce violent clashes, killings, and intimidation that had troubled residents for years.
Security officials also warned that the amnesty window does not protect hardened criminals who refuse to abandon violence. They assured the public that aggressive operations will continue against all armed groups still involved in cult-related crimes across the state.
Residents of the affected communities have expressed relief over the development, saying the surrender could mark a new beginning for peace and stability in the area. Many also appealed to the government to support the rehabilitation and reintegration of the repentant youths to prevent a return to crime.
