Waldrum questions NFF World Cup grant
Former Super Falcons head coach Randy Waldrum has raised serious questions over the use of the 960,000 dollar FIFA World Cup grant released to the Nigeria Football Federation following the women’s national team appearance at the 2023 World Cup. Waldrum expressed concern over how the funds were handled, saying the players and technical crew were not properly informed about the spending of the money meant for their welfare and preparation.
Waldrum explained that the grant was intended to support the players, improve logistics, and strengthen technical preparation for the team. He noted that despite the significant amount released by FIFA, many players still struggled with unpaid allowances, poor travel arrangements, and inadequate support during the tournament. According to him, these challenges affected morale and placed unnecessary pressure on the squad.
The former coach also revealed that repeated requests for clarity on the fund’s disbursement were either ignored or poorly addressed. He described the situation as disappointing and unfair to players who represented the country with pride on the world stage. His comments have sparked renewed public debate over transparency and accountability in the administration of football in Nigeria.
The Nigeria Football Federation has yet to issue a detailed public response to Waldrum’s claims. However, the revelation has further intensified calls from football stakeholders and fans for an open investigation into how national team funds are managed to protect the interests of players and restore trust in the system.
