Plateau records new HIV cases
Plateau State has recorded a total of 1,910 new HIV cases within a nine-month period, raising fresh concerns about the spread of the virus and the need for stronger prevention efforts across the state. Health officials disclosed that the new cases were identified through routine testing, community outreach, and hospital screenings between January and September. The figure reflects ongoing transmission within the population despite sustained awareness campaigns.
Authorities explained that a large number of the newly reported cases were discovered among young adults and people within the economically active age group. This trend has sparked renewed calls for increased education on safe practices, regular testing, and the reduction of stigma that still prevents many people from knowing their status early. Health workers noted that early detection remains one of the strongest tools in managing the disease and preventing further spread.
The state government said it is strengthening collaboration with health partners and non-governmental organisations to improve access to testing, treatment, and counselling services. Officials also assured residents that antiretroviral drugs are available at treatment centres across the state and encouraged those living with HIV to remain consistent with medication to live healthy lives and reduce transmission.
Public health experts have urged residents to take personal responsibility by knowing their HIV status, avoiding risky behaviour, and supporting those affected rather than shaming them. They stressed that the rising figure is a reminder that the virus remains a major public health challenge that requires continuous and collective effort to control.
