Police arrest masquerade in Akwa Ibom
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a masquerade just days after Governor Umo Eno banned all masquerade activities across the state. The arrest was carried out during a routine security patrol after the masquerade was found parading in defiance of the government directive. The action by the police has been described as part of efforts to enforce the ban and restore public safety.
According to police sources, the arrested masquerade was taken into custody after residents raised an alarm over the display, which caused tension and fear in the area. Officers quickly moved in and effected the arrest without resistance. The suspect was immediately handed over to the appropriate authorities for further investigation and possible prosecution for violating the state government’s order.
The state government had earlier announced a total ban on masquerade activities following reports of intimidation, violence, and the use of masquerade displays as cover for criminal acts in some communities. Governor Umo Eno directed security agencies to enforce the ban strictly and ensure that residents go about their daily activities without fear.
Residents of the affected area have welcomed the swift action by the police, describing it as a sign that the government is serious about maintaining peace and order. Many community members have also urged the authorities to sustain enforcement across all parts of the state to prevent further breakdown of law and order.
