Police warn against illegal VIP escorts
The Nigeria Police Force has issued a strong warning that any police officer found escorting a private individual or VIP without official approval is on illegal duty and will face immediate arrest. The directive was made public by the Force Public Relations Officer, who said the move is part of renewed efforts to curb the misuse of police personnel and restore proper deployment across the country.
The police spokesperson explained that officers are meant to provide security based on lawful assignments and operational needs, not for private protection of individuals who are not entitled to such services. He noted that the illegal use of police escorts has deprived many communities of adequate security coverage and weakened effective policing in high-risk areas.
The Force said monitoring teams have already been deployed to major cities and highways to identify officers engaged in unauthorised escort duties. Any officer caught violating the order will be arrested, investigated, and disciplined in line with existing police regulations. The command also warned private individuals who engage such services to desist, as they may also face legal consequences.
Members of the public have been urged to report any suspicious or illegal use of police escorts through official channels. The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to professional conduct, accountability, and the proper use of manpower to enhance public safety across the nation.
