Sheikh Gumi alleges foreign backing of terrorists in Nigeria
Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has alleged that foreign powers are backing terrorist groups operating in Nigeria. He made the claim while speaking on the worsening security crisis across different parts of the country and the sustained strength of armed groups despite years of military operations.
Sheikh Gumi said the level of weapons, coordination, and funding available to the terrorists suggests support beyond local sources. He argued that it is difficult for such groups to sustain prolonged violence without external backing. According to him, Nigeria is facing a complex security challenge that goes beyond internal criminal activity.
The cleric also stated that continued instability benefits certain international interests, especially those connected to arms trafficking and illegal resource exploitation. He warned that without addressing external influence, efforts to end terrorism in Nigeria may remain ineffective.
Sheikh Gumi called on the federal government to strengthen intelligence cooperation with global partners while also tightening border security to block external support routes. He stressed that fighting terrorism requires both military action and a clear understanding of the broader international factors driving the conflict.
His comments have triggered fresh debate across the country, with many Nigerians calling for deeper investigation into alleged foreign involvement. Security agencies are yet to issue an official response to his claims.
