Court rejects Nnamdi Kanu transfer request
A court has declined the request by Nnamdi Kanu to be transferred from Sokoto Prison to another correctional facility. The ruling follows an application by his legal team, who had asked for his relocation on grounds of convenience and access to legal counsel, among other concerns.
During the court session, Kanu’s lawyers argued that his continued stay in Sokoto was affecting regular consultation and preparation for his ongoing legal matters. They maintained that his transfer to a facility closer to his legal team and family would better support his right to fair trial and adequate legal representation.
However, the court ruled that there was no sufficient legal basis to compel the Nigerian Correctional Service to move him at this time. The judge held that issues of inmate placement fall largely under the authority of correctional authorities, except where clear evidence of rights violation is established.
Following the ruling, Kanu’s supporters expressed disappointment, while his legal team indicated that they would continue to explore lawful options to ensure his welfare and access to justice are not compromised. The decision has also continued to draw public attention due to the sensitive nature of his case.
Nnamdi Kanu remains in custody at the Sokoto correctional facility as legal proceedings linked to his case continue. The development adds another layer to the long-running legal battle that has remained in national focus.
