EFCC warns Nigerians against celebrating corruption
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has urged Nigerians to stop celebrating individuals linked to corruption, warning that such actions undermine the fight against financial crimes and weaken national values. The anti-graft agency said public admiration for people facing corruption allegations sends the wrong message, especially to young Nigerians.
According to the EFCC, glorifying wealth whose sources cannot be clearly explained encourages a culture where corruption is normalised and even rewarded. The commission stressed that corruption remains a major obstacle to Nigeria’s development, contributing to poverty, insecurity, and weak public institutions. It added that celebrating corrupt figures erodes trust in the rule of law and disrespects citizens who earn their living legitimately.
EFCC officials noted that the agency often faces resistance when suspects are treated as heroes by supporters, despite ongoing investigations or court cases. They explained that this social attitude makes accountability more difficult and discourages whistleblowing and civic responsibility. The commission called on community leaders, influencers, and the media to help promote integrity and honesty instead of questionable success.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing corruption cases without fear or favour and appealed to Nigerians to support lawful efforts to recover stolen public funds. It said national progress depends not only on enforcement but also on a collective change in mindset that rejects corruption in all its forms.
