Imo police officers face orderly room trial over extortion
The Imo State Police Command has announced that several of its officers will face an orderly room trial over allegations of extortion in Obowo Local Government Area. The move follows public complaints and internal investigations indicating that some officers may have abused their powers by demanding money from residents and road users under unlawful circumstances.
According to the command’s statement, officers implicated in the matter will be subjected to disciplinary proceedings within the police force. An orderly room trial is an internal police disciplinary mechanism where accused officers are formally charged, allowed to respond, and judged according to the Police Act and relevant regulations. If found guilty, officers could face sanctions ranging from reprimands and demotions to dismissal from the service.
The Imo State Police Command emphasised that it takes allegations of misconduct seriously, particularly those involving extortion or exploitation of citizens, which erode public trust and hamper effective policing. The command assured the public that the trial would be fair, transparent, and in line with established procedures. It also urged residents to provide credible information to assist investigations and help root out unprofessional behaviour within the force.
Community leaders and human rights advocates have welcomed the disciplinary action, saying such steps are necessary to strengthen accountability and reduce police abuses. They urged swift but just handling of the case to send a clear signal that misconduct by law enforcement personnel will not be tolerated.
