Goodluck Jonathan urges leaders to put people first in New Year message
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has urged Nigerian leaders to put the welfare of the people at the centre of governance or risk jeopardising the country’s future. He gave the warning in his New Year message, where he reflected on the state of the nation and called for leadership driven by compassion, accountability, and service to citizens rather than personal or sectional interests.
Jonathan said Nigeria’s progress depends largely on decisions made by those in positions of authority, stressing that policies must be guided by how they affect ordinary people. He noted that economic hardship, insecurity, and social tensions continue to place heavy pressure on Nigerians, adding that leaders have a responsibility to respond with empathy and practical solutions. According to him, ignoring the needs of the people could deepen distrust in government and weaken national unity.
The former president also appealed for peaceful coexistence and responsible conduct among citizens, saying national development is a shared responsibility. He encouraged leaders at all levels to use the New Year as an opportunity to renew their commitment to good governance, transparency, and inclusive growth. Jonathan expressed hope that with people-focused leadership, Nigeria can overcome its challenges and build a more stable and prosperous future.
