Kebbi orders reopening of primary and secondary schools
The Kebbi State Government has ordered the reopening of all primary and secondary schools across the state for the second term of the 2025/2026 academic session, ending a temporary closure that followed security concerns earlier in the school year. The directive states that both public and private schools will resume on Monday, January 5, 2026, and calls on school administrators, teachers, parents and students to ensure strict compliance with the resumption date as the education calendar is restored.
According to the official statement issued by the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and the Ministry for Basic and Secondary Education, the first week after reopening will be devoted to completing outstanding first-term examinations, with normal academic lessons beginning on January 12, 2026. School heads have been instructed to make adequate preparations to guarantee a smooth return to classrooms, and parents and guardians are urged to ensure their children return promptly.
The closure of schools in parts of Kebbi last term came after the abduction of 25 schoolgirls from the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga by bandits in November 2025, an incident that heightened concerns about student safety. Following their eventual rescue, the state government made the decision to safely reopen schools while continuing efforts to protect educational environments.
