FCT Police warn women not to accept free rides from strangers
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Commissioner, Miller Dantawaye, has issued a stern warning to residents, especially women, urging them not to accept free rides from strangers as part of broader efforts to improve safety and reduce crime in Abuja. The warning was delivered during a courtesy and advocacy visit by a delegation from the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), which included members of the International Federation of Women Lawyers, the NBA Women Forum, and the Unity Bar at the FCT Police Command headquarters.
Commissioner Dantawaye emphasised that residents must remain vigilant and security-conscious at all times, particularly when boarding commercial vehicles. He advised the public to be cautious of unsolicited lifts and to avoid getting into cars offered by unknown persons. The police believe that such precautions can help prevent people from falling victim to what they describe as “one-chance” criminal operations, which have been linked to recent attacks and killings in the territory.
The appeal by the FCT-command signals growing concern within security circles about rising reports of kidnappings and other violent crimes in and around Abuja. Authorities are calling on the public to work alongside law enforcement by sharing timely information and reporting suspicious activities. Residents have been reminded that public cooperation is a key element in curbing criminal activities and ensuring community safety.
During the same meeting, the commissioner also expressed condolences to the Nigerian Bar Association for the death of their colleague, Ms. Princess Ochigbo, whose body was found on the Kubwa Expressway. Police assured the delegation that discreet and extensive investigations have begun to identify and apprehend those responsible.
The police warning is a continuation of recent safety advisories in the FCT that aim to protect vulnerable road users and passengers from criminal exploitation and to foster a more secure environment for all residents.
