Tony Blair, Mark Carney and Marco Rubio named to Trump-led Gaza reconstruction Board of Peace
Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio have been named as key members of a new international body called the “Board of Peace,” chaired by U.S. President Donald Trump, to oversee the reconstruction and stabilisation of Gaza following the Israel-Hamas war. The Board of Peace is part of Trump’s broader 20-point peace plan aimed at moving beyond the fragile ceasefire and toward rebuilding the territory and its governance structures.
The Board of Peace is designed to provide high-level political and strategic oversight for Gaza’s recovery, including governance reform, investment attraction and regional relations, with Trump acting as its chairman. Alongside Blair and Rubio, the board includes Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, special envoy Steve Witkoff, World Bank President Ajay Banga, private equity leader Marc Rowan, and U.S. deputy national security adviser Robert Gabriel.
Blair’s appointment has drawn particular attention due to his controversial past role as a Middle East envoy and criticisms from various actors in the region. Canada’s Mark Carney has also been invited to join the board as part of the international effort, reflecting a wider diplomatic push to include global leadership in the reconstruction process, although final acceptance and formalisation of his role were still being finalised at the time of the announcement.
The announcement has already prompted pushback from Israeli officials, who said the plan and its leadership structure were not coordinated with Israeli authorities and run contrary to their policy objectives, underscoring the diplomatic complexity and tensions surrounding the Gaza reconstruction initiative.
