Police arrest man over alleged murder of his girlfriend in Edo
Police in Edo State have arrested a 42-year-old man over the alleged murder of his girlfriend, following the discovery of her body in Benin City earlier this month. The Edo State Police Command confirmed that operatives responded to a report on January 10, 2026, after a lifeless female body was found near a roadside by a river in the Ikpe community of the Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area. Subsequent police investigations identified the victim as 32-year-old Joy Jerome, a resident of Upper Sakponba Road, and led to the arrest of Osabuohen Igerevba, a commercial mini-bus driver from the same area. The police spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem, said that Igerevba and Jerome were in a romantic relationship and that an argument reportedly broke out on the night of January 9, 2026 while they were heading towards his residence. During the confrontation, Igerevba allegedly physically assaulted the woman, who later became unresponsive and was pronounced dead upon arrival at a hospital. In a state of panic, the suspect is said to have driven to a nearby riverside community and dumped her body, where it was discovered the following day. Police confirmed that the suspect has been taken into custody and has reportedly confessed to the crime, and further investigations are ongoing as authorities caution the public about domestic disputes and urged vigilance in relationships.
