Boko Haram kills 17 in Borno massacre
Suspected Boko Haram militants have killed at least 17 civilians in a violent assault in Guzamala-Abbari village and surrounding areas of Guzamala and Nganzai Local Government Areas of Borno State. Local officials confirmed the massacre, which took place on Saturday, leaving families and communities in mourning as bodies were recovered and buried according to local customs.
The Borno State House of Assembly Speaker, Rt. Hon. Abdulkarim Lawan, expressed profound shock over the killings and extended condolences to the bereaved families. He said 12 bodies were recovered in Guzamala-Abbari village, while five others were found in a nearby settlement in Nganzai, and that search and rescue efforts are still ongoing as more people are feared missing. Lawan urged continued support for the military and other security agencies in their operations against insurgents.
Residents describe the region as one still recovering from years of violence, displacement, and disruption caused by the Boko Haram insurgency. The attackers are believed to have targeted civilians in areas that remain vulnerable despite ongoing operations by Nigerian forces. The Speaker stressed the importance of sustaining counter-terrorism efforts, especially Operation HADIN KAI, to eliminate insurgent remnants in forests and other hideouts to ensure lasting peace and stability in the northeastern region.
This latest massacre highlights the persistent threat posed by Boko Haram and its splinter groups, which have waged a long-running insurgency in northeastern Nigeria, killing tens of thousands of people and displacing millions since 2009.
