Lagos postpones Green Line rail construction to December 2025
The Lagos State Government has announced that the construction of the highly anticipated $3 billion Green Line rail project, which links Marina to the Lekki corridor, will now begin in December 2025. The project had been expected to start earlier, but delays in finalising stakeholder consultations, environmental clearances, and preparatory works have pushed the commencement date back. The update was confirmed by the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi.
The Green Line is planned to be a 68-kilometre rail transit route running from Marina through Victoria Island, across the Lekki-Epe Expressway, then onward to Ajah, Sangotedo, and the Lekki Free Trade Zone. The route will feature about 17 stations, using a mix of elevated and at-grade tracks.
The government says that extensive feasibility studies have been completed and that stakeholder engagements have taken place along the Lekki-Epe corridor to ensure the project aligns with local plans and environmental requirements. Lagos has also started enforcing abatement notices and clearing encroachments, especially in wetlands along the proposed route, to secure the right-of-way for construction.
The project will be implemented in phases. The first phase will cover the stretch from Lekki First Tollgate to Epe, while the second phase — including an on-water segment — will start from Marina. The government estimates the construction period to be two to three years once works commence.
Osiyemi and other officials have called for public cooperation, especially from residents and businesses along the corridor, to allow smooth preparatory processes. He also emphasized that protection of the environment, especially wetlands, is a priority, and that master planning must be adhered to.
