IPI Nigeria urges Disu to end press repression
The International Press Institute Nigeria has called on Acting Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu to end what it described as a recurring pattern of press repression and violations against journalists in the country. The media freedom group urged the new police chief to use his tenure to rebuild trust between law enforcement agencies and the media.
In a statement released shortly after Disu assumed office, IPI Nigeria expressed concern over reported cases of harassment, unlawful arrests and intimidation of journalists across different states. The organisation said the trend has created fear within newsrooms and undermined the role of the press in holding public officials accountable. It stressed that a free and independent media is essential for democratic governance and national development.
IPI Nigeria noted that the appointment of a new acting IGP presents an opportunity for reform within the Nigeria Police Force. The group called for clear directives to officers nationwide to respect journalists’ rights and comply strictly with constitutional provisions guaranteeing freedom of expression and the press. It also encouraged regular engagement between police authorities and media stakeholders to prevent future conflicts.
Media advocates have repeatedly raised concerns about the misuse of cybercrime and defamation laws to detain reporters and critics. IPI Nigeria urged Disu to ensure that officers do not weaponise legal instruments to silence dissenting voices. According to the organisation, accountability mechanisms within the police must be strengthened to address complaints involving misconduct against journalists.
The call comes amid broader conversations about civic space and democratic freedoms in Nigeria. Observers say the response of the acting IGP to these concerns will shape public perception of his leadership and determine whether there will be tangible improvements in the relationship between security agencies and the media.
