INEC chairman must resign Olawepo-Hashim
A former presidential candidate, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has called for the resignation of the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, stating that the commission cannot deliver a credible election under the current leadership. His remarks have intensified debate over electoral reforms ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Olawepo-Hashim argued that public confidence in the electoral process has been weakened by recent controversies. He said restoring trust in Nigeria’s democracy requires bold leadership changes and structural reforms within INEC. According to him, credibility is central to free and fair elections, and any perception of bias or inefficiency must be addressed urgently.
The politician stressed that Nigeria’s democratic progress depends on transparent and accountable institutions. He maintained that electoral integrity is the foundation of political stability and national development. He also urged civil society groups and political stakeholders to push for comprehensive reforms that would strengthen the electoral system.
In response, supporters of the electoral commission have defended its record, pointing to technological innovations and procedural improvements introduced in recent election cycles. They argue that while challenges exist, institutional reforms should focus on strengthening processes rather than targeting individuals.
Political analysts say calls for resignation often reflect broader concerns about governance and trust in public institutions. As preparations for future elections gather momentum, debates over INEC’s leadership and operational capacity are expected to remain central in national discourse.
