Who is Iran Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is Iran’s Supreme Leader and the country’s highest political and religious authority. He has held the position since 1989, making him one of the longest-serving leaders in the Middle East. As Supreme Leader, he has ultimate control over Iran’s armed forces, judiciary, state media, and key political decisions, placing him above the elected president in the country’s power structure.
Khamenei was born in 1939 in Mashhad, Iran, into a religious family. He studied Islamic theology and became involved in political activism against the rule of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. During the 1979 Islamic Revolution, he was a close ally of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic. After the revolution, Khamenei held several key roles, including president of Iran from 1981 to 1989.
Following Khomeini’s death in 1989, Khamenei was appointed Supreme Leader by the Assembly of Experts. In this role, he oversees Iran’s strategic direction, including foreign policy, defense, and nuclear development. He also appoints top military commanders and heads of major institutions, and he has significant influence over elections through bodies that vet candidates.
Under Khamenei’s leadership, Iran has maintained a firm stance against the United States and Israel, while expanding its regional influence through alliances with groups and governments across the Middle East. His tenure has been marked by tensions with Western countries over Iran’s nuclear program, economic sanctions, and regional security issues.
Domestically, Khamenei has faced criticism from reformists and human rights organizations over restrictions on political freedoms, media control, and the handling of protests. Supporters, however, view him as a guardian of Iran’s sovereignty and Islamic values, crediting him with preserving stability in a volatile region.
Khamenei remains a central figure in Iran’s political system, shaping policy decisions that affect not only the country but also broader Middle East dynamics.
