FIFA lists Congo for World Cup playoff despite Nigeria protest
Shehu Dikko, a Nigerian football administrator, has explained why FIFA listed Congo for the World Cup playoff despite Nigeria’s formal protest over the qualification process.
Dikko said the global football governing body acted in accordance with its established regulations and timelines when releasing the playoff lineup. According to him, FIFA follows strict procedural guidelines when handling disputes related to qualification matches, and any protest must pass through detailed legal and disciplinary reviews before it can influence the outcome of a competition.
The Nigeria Football Federation had earlier submitted a protest to FIFA, questioning Congo’s eligibility in the qualification process. The complaint reportedly focused on concerns surrounding compliance with tournament rules and possible irregularities during the qualifying stages.
However, Dikko noted that FIFA proceeded with listing Congo for the playoff because the available documentation and records at the time did not warrant an immediate change to the competition structure. He explained that protests in international football often require strong evidence and must go through multiple stages of investigation before a final decision is reached.
He further stressed that FIFA’s decisions are guided by its statutes and competition regulations, meaning that even when a complaint is filed, the governing body may allow matches or playoff arrangements to continue while the matter is being reviewed.
Dikko also urged patience among Nigerian football fans and stakeholders, stating that disputes of this nature are typically resolved through formal processes within FIFA’s disciplinary and legal bodies.
The situation has sparked debate within Nigeria’s football community, with many supporters hoping the country’s protest could affect the playoff arrangement for the global tournament.
