Tinubu approves ambassadorial postings for Yakubu and Reno Omokri
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of 65 new ambassadors, including former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, and political commentator Reno Omokri.
The ambassadorial postings, which were announced as part of the federal government’s diplomatic reshuffle, also include 63 other nominees drawn from various sectors of public service. The appointments are aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s diplomatic presence across different countries and international organizations.
Government sources said the new ambassadors will represent Nigeria in strategic foreign missions and are expected to promote the country’s interests abroad. The move is also seen as part of the administration’s effort to reposition Nigeria’s foreign policy and deepen bilateral relations with key global partners.
Mahmood Yakubu’s nomination comes after his tenure as chairman of INEC, where he oversaw several electoral cycles and reforms within Nigeria’s electoral system. Reno Omokri, known for his political commentary and advocacy, is also among the nominees selected for diplomatic service.
Officials say the list reflects a mix of experienced public servants, technocrats, and political figures who are expected to help advance Nigeria’s economic diplomacy, trade partnerships, and international cooperation.
The appointments are expected to be transmitted to the Senate for confirmation in line with constitutional provisions. Once confirmed, the new ambassadors will be deployed to various diplomatic missions around the world to represent Nigeria’s interests.
